Support: Dealing with Stress in the Workplace

Key Strategies for Reducing Stress [2.10.2.e]

Burnout develops when stress is consistently present over a long period of time. To prevent stress and the development of burnout, organizations should monitor the stress levels among staff members and intervene to reduce or prevent stressful circumstances.

The Australian National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA) suggests a top-down and bottom-up approach, which includes approaches at three levels: a broad system level, an organizational level, and an individual staff level. This material deals with the organizational and individual staff approaches. It suggests ways to reduce stressors, modify staff’s responses to stress, and recommends treatment when necessary.
